Disclaimer: This turned into a much longer race report than I originally intended...don't feel like you need to read it all:)

The M22 Challenge is a small event in northern Michigan in Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Park. I’ve competed in the M22 since it began 3 years ago. This year two other Berrien County athletes joined me - Jeff Smoke (a 2008 Olympic Kayaker) and Michael Smedley (a pro triathlete in the early 2000’s). Friday night before the race the three of us met in transition and took our boats out for a paddle (this being my 2nd paddle since the event last year:). I took off first knowing I would quickly be passed by Smoke and Smedley who each had boats over 20 feet long. As I was paddling, Smoke comes up beside me literally going 5x my speed and hollers - ‘Hey Keri, your paddle is backwards.’ Good to know.

Race Day: I woke at 430 to a huge thunderstorm with pouring rain. 30 minutes before the start the rain cleared, but the roads were still wet with puddles. I chose not to have a disc wheel as I was nervous about wind gusts with the storm.

RUN: First there was a 2.5 mile run which began with .5 mile on the road...then a climb up sleeping bear sand dune. The first man and first woman to top is names king and queen of the dune. I needed to defend my title from last year so I took off a bit fast for me. Mike Smedley lead the pack of 548 athletes up the dune but was surpassed in the last 50 feet. Somehow I made it to

the top as the first female! The rest of the run was trails where I just tried to relax and enjoy.

BIKE: I hopped on my bike in about 20th place overall. I was conservative at first as the roads are winding and unfamiliar. Around mile 5 I was in a rhythm. At mile 11 I hit the largest hill of the race, ‘Inspiration Point’. Two thirds of the way up it I was standing in my large chain ring going 10mph. I was ‘inspired’ to shift to the small chain ring...then the hill got steep. At one point I was going 6mph. The flip-side of the hill was fast, winding and wet. I only braked one time and stayed aero for 90% of it. I finished the bike in 4th place overall.

KAYAK: I had placed my boat (actually Lindy’s) in the ‘Expert’ kayak transition area. It was the only plastic boat there. Don’t get me wrong, Lindy’s boat was excellent, but it just doesn’t compare to a 21 ft carbon fiber Surf Ski. Ah well. I ran my boat into the water and paddled as hard as I could muster. In the 2.5 miles I was passed by 2 boats to finish 6th overall.

1st Swim in Singer Lake

SINGER LAKE SWIM
7:30AM Sunday
For most of us a 1st outdoor swim of the season.
For all of us a 1st oudoor swim in Singer....

Welcome to Beautiful Singer Lake, Baroda Twp, MI
This tiny lake serves as our early season open water training until
 the Big Lake is bareable.
Today the water was calm and murky.
The H2O temp was close to 70 as my hands and feet did not turn blue.
There was one boat of fisherman.  I'm sure they were not pleased to see us.
I swam next to a large turtle.
I'm sure it was a snapper.
I'm glad he dove deeper.
I couldn't see where he went.
Not nearly as sexy as the aquatic life and ocean floor in Kona.
I miss Kona.
There was some random dude taking pictures.
"UR Gonna Swim?  IN THERE?  OOOHWEE, I gottta see this!"

Creepy, Foggy Photo
Preparing to search for the Singer Lake Monster.
(do dee do dee do dee do dee do dee)
Is that enough "do dee do dee's?"

Look at these rubberized creatures....haha!
They come with names:
Maddog, Yac, Mike, Dan and AG
Ut oh, Maddog coming at me, "What you'd you say?
This wetsuit make me look what?
You wanna piece of me?"

Oh my bad, Maddog just wanted to take my pic with the group.
Proof I was there.

"Signs, signs everywhere there's signs....
do this, don't drive into the stupid lake, can't you read the sigh---ine"
Just because I'm not one to state the obvious,
doesn't mean Baroda shouldn't.

And, with that...

"THIS BLOG ENDS!"

WooHoo!

Memorial Day Ride 2011

MEMORIAL DAY RIDE!!
5/30/2011
8AM

(Posting this a week after the fact!...It is the X-way)

After a full weekend of rain and ugly weather we could hardly contain our engines.
What was supposed to be a moderate intensity ride
would end in a 30mph big gear interval in the homestretch.
I rode harder at times today than I did racing yesterday.
Geesh!

A fun ride followed by a 15 minute transition run and coffee!
A great Memorial Day Morning!

Gentlemen and Women start your engines.

We wound through the hills of Baroda and made our way to Buchanan.
We were just a bit ahead of the parade to salute our Vets!

Paul Johnson looking smooth on his QR.
A little heavy on the toe point.
Man, you're a biker not a ballerina!

Seek, "There's the camera lens look that way."
ONS, "I think I am in it!"
Yac, "WHOA!  I'm getting squeezed out!"

Tomas decides to join us before he heads off for the Tour.

Order them coffee Doug, you may want to stunt their growth.

Sandy Jackson and Sylvia Etter
Wisely chose to do their own ride and join us for coffee after.

The group enjoying iced coffee on our 1st hot morning ride of 2011.

Seahorse Triathlons + Duathlon 2011

Southwest Michigan Triathletes at
2011 Seahorse Sprint and Olympic Triathlon and Duathlon!!!

A foggy morning in Climax, Michigan.
60 degree water temperature
The kind of temperature that renders comments like,
"Please feel free to pee in front of me!"
to actually be considered valid and not weird at all.
Wet, hilly roads with a couple nicely pitted sections.
And, a run course of muddy, slippery, rooty trails --
when did we sign up for DWD?
A great 1st multi-sport event for several local athletes.

Jenna Davis, CJ Hawkins and Bob, Shelly and Randy Taylor
hanging out as Seahorse!
Randy is the only one enjoying this picture.

Odie Williams (ONS) and Ryan Taylor
"Dude, I'm taller than you."
"No you're not.
"Yes, I am.  A lot."

Fred Hemsath and Andrea Hutchins (X)
Fred and I have the same head shape...hmmmmm

Ryan Taylor accepting his award and making a statement.
All the celebrities have a voice,
"Save the Earth Ride a Big Wheel"

Ryan powered his big wheel to 1st Overall Male in the sprint!

Jenna Davis 1st Age Group 25-29 Sprint Triathlon
"What do I do with this?"
"You use it to open beer bottles, Jenna."

Randy Taylor striking a pose.
"I am just too darn cute and smart!
Mom can do all the work and I can wear the medal!"

X collects 1st Overall Female in the Olympic
There is a better pic of me,
but I decided to stay true to form and post the dorky one.
I'm going to work with Randy on improving my posing.

Fred Hemsath collects 2nd Age Group 65-69 Olympic
Collecting his1 millionth medal or thereabouts.

CJ collects 3rd in Olympic 25-29
CJ, if X were a boy and 25-29 you'd of been off the podium.
Next time buddy!--only a couple of minutes :-)

ONS, YOU ARE A CLYDESDALE!
"Hey this was nothing!  Ironman Texas 1 week ago.
And, now I am the Champion of the Seahorse Olympic Clydesdales.
Not to mention I'd of been 2nd in my age division
had I not eaten those muffins on the drive to the race."

The Taylor clan!
Ryan, Randy, Bob and Shelly!
Say, "Aw"

Buy, your triathlon shoes at Taylor'd Running and support this local family.

Good Luck ONS (Odie Williams) at Memorial Herman Ironman Texas

Good Luck to Odie Williams "ONS"
as you venture towards the finish line of your first Ironman,
Memorial Herman Ironman Texas.
We're cheering for you every stroke, every step of every mile.

A few WooHoo's at SouthShore's hot tub with ONS before
shipping him off to Texas where he will become as "IRONMAN".
Are these 5:45 AM swims worth it?
"Yes, because I will be an Ironman!"

Welcome to Lake Woodlands, The Woodlands Texas.
We invite you to swim 2.4 miles
in our regularly "off limits" waters with the locals.
And, by locals we mean Water Moccasins.

Setting out the gear bag.

Good luck sneaking in and out of the house when you're older Maddy.
Your dad has some Hearing SKILZ.

This is where ONS leaves "Mocca" behind tomorrow!
End of the Swim.

ONS following the Karen Smyers' 3-2-1 taper strategy.

"Now that's what I would call the purrrrrrfect hydration plan for a hot Ironman!
U go Odie!  All the Woo Hoo's wish you the best!"
